a b s t r a c t This work explores the use of statistical techniques, namely stratiﬁed sampling and cluster analysis, as powerful tools for deriving trafﬁc properties at the ﬂow level. Our results show that the adequate selection of samples leads to signiﬁcant improvements allowing further important statistical analysis. Although stratiﬁed sampling is a well-known technique, the way we classify the data prior to sampling is innovative and deserves special attention. We evaluate two partitioning clustering methods, namely clustering large applications (CLARA) and K-means, and validate their outcomes by using them as thresholds for stratiﬁed sampling. We show that using ﬂow sizes to divide the population we can obtain accurate estimates for both size and ﬂow durations. The presented sampling and clustering classiﬁcation techniques achieve data reduction levels higher than that of existing methods, on the order of 0.1% while maintaining good accuracy for the estimates of the sum, mean and variance for both ﬂow duration and sizes. 1. Introduction Trafﬁc monitoring is seen as an important tool for engineering networks of varying sizes [21]. Characterizing and understanding the trafﬁc mix enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to devise new business and settlement models. Recently, the pie has been shifting from transport to content services and understandably many sought a piece of the new opportunities. Efﬁcient measurement strategies became an essential tool contributing to a number of tasks some of which were unforeseen until today. Trafﬁc measurement has been used for identifying anomalous behavior (such as unexpected high trafﬁc volumes due to denial of service attacks, routing problems, etc.), for designing and validating new trafﬁc models, for adequate planning of seasonal activities, such as upgrading network capacity,

which allows introducing new services or the adoption of usage-based and content-based pricing. Commonly used ﬂow monitoring tools (such as Cisco’s NetFlow [2] and Juniper’s JFlow [17]) and packet level capture tools suffer from lack of scalability relative to link capacity. Monitoring high-speed links, such as OC-48 and OC-192 yields huge data volumes. Currently both CPU and storage capacities remain limiting factors. As link capacity and the number of ﬂows grow, maintaining individual counters for each individual ﬂow traversing a router becomes computationally and/or economically cumbersome to keep up with [1,5,6]. In order to address this issue, sampling has been used a proven statistical strategy for dealing with high volumes of network trafﬁc data [3]. It has the advantage of lowering the processing cost, the storage and hardware requirements in a network monitoring infrastructure. Like a quality control engineer, a network engineer needs to collect data at diverse time frames and places. Therefore, to make this process faster as well as accurate, one should rely on analyzing only a small, although relevant, subset of the network trafﬁc data. This sample is then

analyzed and a statistical quality verdict is given. In other words, one only needs to observe a small part of the trafﬁc to visualize the big picture. Fig. 1 shows how sampling can be used as a ﬂow ﬁlter capable of selecting a representative set of ﬂows only. By representative we mean those when selected, will give us an accurate view of the trafﬁc mix. We show in this work that the classiﬁcation strategy – also known as clustering – is primordial to achieve reduction of stored data but yet keeping its representativeness. Sampling may be applied during the capture (packet level) or after data summarization (ﬂow level). Fig. 2 depicts the envisioned beneﬁts of using sampling techniques for ﬂow trafﬁc data management. A typical scenario is made of a router that captures packets and builds ﬂows, a collector that retrieves and stores ﬂow records and an application with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that generates reports out of the stored data. The numbers indicate the possible sources of improvements when deploying sampling techniques at different components of the network management apparatus. On-line sampling may be performed directly by routers at the time they are capturing packets and building ﬂows, whereas off-line sampling is performed after ﬂows are built by the router and transmitted to the ﬂow collector. If off-line sampling is used, optimizations may be obtained in the reduced storage requirements for the collector (#3), reduced data communication from the collector to the reporting application (#4) and reduced memory and processing requirements at the reporting application (#5). On the other hand, if
on-line sampling is used, optimizations may be obtained at the reduced processing and memory requirements for the router (#1) and reduced data communication from the router to the collector (#2). The processing and memory requirements will certainly be reduced at the router, since they preserve all ﬂows in memory until they are ﬂushed to the collector and the memory is cleared. If sampling is deployed, the router may detect that a given ﬂow does not need to be stored, so that the allocated memory space for that particular ﬂow can be released and the processing work of the remaining ﬂows will be performed faster. A variety of sampling strategies have been proposed recently for optimizing the packet selection process (for ﬂow accounting) [18–20] and ﬂow selection (for statistical analysis of the original trafﬁc). Sampling techniques may be divided into systematic, random and stratiﬁed sampling [4,24]. The simplest sampling process is uniform 1/N sampling (a type of systematic sampling), where one of every N packets is retained. Although this technique has been largely used, e.g. by CISCO’s Netﬂow in low-speed links, it does not always present adequate results since it has been shown that IP ﬂows usually have heavy-tailed distributions for packets and bytes [6]. In such a situation, the selected packets from the sampling process will be biased by the huge number of small packets and just a few will be selected from the tail, i.e., the bigger packets. Sampling may also be target dependent where for example only ﬂows above a given size or duration are retained for charging purposes or selective of given services such as VoIP and

other P2P ﬁle sharing activities for content-based charging [7]. Some sampling strategies, however, rely on ﬂow information as they account only for relatively large ﬂows, also leading to a biased sampling process due to the unbalanced number of selected small ﬂows (also known as ‘‘mices”) and bigger ﬂows (also known as ‘‘elephants”) [25]. The main contribution of this work is the introduction of a new ﬂow classiﬁcation methodology which applies two well studied statistical techniques, namely stratiﬁed sampling and cluster analysis, in order to reduce the amount of collected trafﬁc that is necessary for characterizing the trafﬁc ﬂows. However, drawing a pattern from scratch takes a lot of time and requires an entirely different skill set… one that many home sewers – especially those new to sewing – simply do not have. The humongous pattern catalogs still exist as well.

This requires my taking a trip to the local sewing and craft shop. In this age of the internet and instant gratification, we can also shop for patterns online. Traditional, tried and true pattern companies offer their entire catalogs on the internet, as do many not so familiar pattern suppliers.

In the last few years, I have noticed an increasing number of sources that offer free sewing patterns. All that is required for one to gain access to and possession of a free pattern is a computer and a printer.

Free patterns are available for practically anything, including clothing and accessories for every member of the family, household décor items, including curtains, comforters, duvet covers, pillows and accents, attire for pets and novelty items.

Free Sewing Downloads

The patterns that are offered as free downloads often require tweaking and adjustment, but they are for the most part usable and fairly accurate.

Of the many sites that offer free sewing patterns, we have come across a few that seem to be quite reliable.
The criteria for my reaching this conclusion are based on three major components:

Design – even though the patterns are free, no one is interested in acquiring a pattern that is not a good design or one that is not appealing to the consumer
Accurate proportions – regardless of the design, a pattern that is not proportionately accurate is no good. Patterns with inaccurate proportions require lots of adjustment and re-drawing. Flaws such as this defeat the purpose of having a pattern.
Clearly written instructions – every pattern comes with instructions. If the instructions are poorly written, the pattern is difficult to follow and the end result may not turn out to be what the user wants.

The companies that offer free sewing patterns which I feel are most dependable and user friendly are:

Burda patterns on burdastyle.com

– Burda – Those of us who remember the early Burda pattern books will be pleased to know that the European pattern company not only sells pre-printed patterns like the traditional US sewing pattern distributors, they also offer many free sewing patterns on their website – burdastyle.

This site contains a wealth of free sewing patterns, most of them for women and children. Unlike many free pattern sites which tend to offer lots of patterns for beginners, many of Burda’s free patterns are designed with the intermediate to advanced home sewer in mind.

I started using Burda patterns in the 1980s when they were sold as inserts in Burda fashion magazines. Back then, it was necessary to trace the desired pattern from a sheet that resembled a bowl of lo mien. With the downloadable patterns, you get only one pattern that must be adjusted to fit your particular size.

The designs for the free patterns offered by Burda are for the most part simple, easy to understand and easy to follow. The proportions are good and the instructions clear, concise and easy to follow.

– Freeneedle.com – This website has been around since 2007 and offers free patterns for just about anything you can imagine, including men’s and women’s clothing and accessories; home accessories including lamp shades, pillows, curtains and accents for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, dining room and living room; children’s clothes; and pet supplies such as pet beds, coats and toys.

The patterns offered by freeneedle are generally represented online as photographs of finished projects, eliminating the problem of guessing what a garment might look like when considering a line drawing.

Every pattern is accompanied by instructions which can be viewed and reviewed before downloading. The site also offers step by step and video instructions for some patterns, and devotes an entire section to “learning to sew” which provides step by step instructions for the beginning home sewer.

– Freesewingpatterns.com – This site is great for the beginner. The patterns are simple and uncomplicated. Most of the downloadable sewing projects offered on this site are for accessories and accent pieces and require just a few steps to execute.

This is an excellent resource for the sewing instructor who wants to give their students something different to work on. Perhaps the first thought after a quick listen to “The Soul Purpose” is that the 7L/ES “sound” that we’ve heard so far is no accident or experimental phase; if you loved what you’ve heard before, you’ll love what you hear now. A full 13 of the 18 musical tracks are produced by either 7L or their longtime collaborator, the Vinyl Reanimators, and they all feature the trademark 7L/ES sound: tight drums and a futuristic, sci-fi flavor, all wrapped up into a highly polished, professional sound with 7L scratching away on top of it all like his life depended on it. None fail to step up, and all do an admirable job of keeping up with the high standards set by Esoteric himself. Lyrically, this album is tight, tight, tight.

Overall, this is an excellent piece of work and worth picking up. As things stand now, it’s my pick for the best hip-hop album of the year, hands down. With this album, 7L & Esoteric have proven themselves to be at or near the top of the underground hip-hop ladder with their dope beats, tight rhymes, and quality production that screams out, “major label,” yet isn’t. Bottom line, this album deserves to be on the shelf of anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of hip-hop.

A Review of ‘Midori’ [1992]

Midori is an anime film that came out in 1992. It was made by one person and it took him a long time to finish it. The quality of the animation is pretty weak. It’s mostly stills of scenes with some movements. You don’t get the smooth product of a Hayao Miyazaki.

Midori is disturbing. There is no mincing of words here. It tells the story of a young girl who lives with her sickly mother. Then something terrible happens and the girl is forced out of their cramped and decaying apartment/room, and into the streets. It is there where she meets the characters that would torture her and abuse her and make her life a living hell. But then, an unlikely person comes to her rescue. He genuinely loves her, though their relationship is still highly questionable.

Muzan-e is a mid-nineteenth-century collection of ukiyo-e prints by the artist Yoshitoshi depicting gruesome scenes of violence. Some of them are sexual in nature. There are lots of blood and gore. Though in the highly stylized / non-anatomically-realistic style which is ukiyo-e, it is still very unsettling. Midori harkens somewhat to that infamous collection, and shows the level of depravity and disturbing images that have been incorporated in Japanese art. To follow on this, you’ll find the same things, though in a more muted and sublime way, in the writings of Yukio Mishima. For all its gruesomeness, there is that element of beauty somehow in the anime Midori and these works.

Midori ends somewhat predictably. Though I will not divulge what happens in here. Overall, the film will leave you with a terrible feeling in the head and the heart, and probably your other internal organs as well. Only a few will be able to find meaning, much more, enjoyment from it. There is something very wrong with you if you find this film entertaining.
